Cowboys aiming for a championship

After suffering a firstround playoff exit in 2021, the Alpine o6 Cowboys are set to return to Pecos League play with a rejuvenated squad that seeks to win it all. The Cowboys will bring back the majority of their roster from last summer, including RBI leader Bryce Donovan, batting average champ Calvin Graves, and surehanded third baseman James Prockish.

Davis Mountain Preserve open June 18

The Nature Conservancy’s Davis Mountains Preserve will be open to the public for hiking, biking, horseback riding, photography, birding, and other outdoor activities on Saturday, June 18, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Buck baseball season comes to an end

The Alpine Buck baseball season ended May 7 with the Brownfield Cubs in the third contest of a three-game series, 10-9. The game was a gut-wrenching loss with the tying run on third, and the winning run on first base at the time of the final out. Alpine took the first game behind junior Teagan Emerson pitching, and Cody Morris came in for the save, 4-2 Bucks. It was a sweltering 100 degrees for the three-game series in Midland.

Buck Band Boosters get a boost

McDonald’s restaurant owner Irma Campbell presented a $3,500 check to Alpine High School Buck Band Boosters on May 11 as part of a fundraiser to benefit the Fightin’ Buck Band students with uniforms, equipment, scholarships, travel costs, and more. Joining Campbell in the front, Buck Band Boosters President Regina Terrazas, Booster Sara Grannis, and McDonald’s Manager Virginia Acosta; in the back, Booster Treasurer Melissa Bergstrom, Booster Elaina Sharron, and Booster Allison Vidal. Boosters raised around $3,300 through the McTeacher Night fundraiser held twice a month from November to May, and Campbell rounded it to make it $3,500. Avalanche photo by Roxanne Hill

Means brings championship to Trans-Pecos

Evan Means, a junior at Texas Tech, won the Non-Pro Division 1 National championship, and helped Texas Tech bring home the national championship for Division 1 in the collegiate ranch horse competition. Ranch horse competition is one of the fastest growing segments of the equine industry.

High expectations and high stakes in West Texas were laid out for the Sul Ross Rodeo State University team this season. Now that the dust has settled after the last regular season event in Stephenville, Coach CJ Aragon and his team are resting up knowing that they hit some remarkable milestones.
