Buck Band Boosters get a boost

McDonald’s restaurant owner Irma Campbell presented a $3,500 check to Alpine High School Buck Band Boosters on May 11 as part of a fundraiser to benefit the Fightin’ Buck Band students with uniforms, equipment, scholarships, travel costs, and more. Joining Campbell in the front, Buck Band Boosters President Regina Terrazas, Booster Sara Grannis, and McDonald’s Manager Virginia Acosta; in the back, Booster Treasurer Melissa Bergstrom, Booster Elaina Sharron, and Booster Allison Vidal. Boosters raised around $3,300 through the McTeacher Night fundraiser held twice a month from November to May, and Campbell rounded it to make it $3,500. Avalanche photo by Roxanne Hill

Means brings championship to Trans-Pecos

Evan Means, a junior at Texas Tech, won the Non-Pro Division 1 National championship, and helped Texas Tech bring home the national championship for Division 1 in the collegiate ranch horse competition. Ranch horse competition is one of the fastest growing segments of the equine industry.

Alpine High School graduate Elena Cano of the University of Alaska Anchorage recently ran a personal-best in the 800 meter to win the heptathlon at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championships on May 2 in Bellingham, Wash.

Lady Bucks see season end

After clinching the second place spot in District 4 this season, the Alpine Lady Bucks faced off against the Littlefield Lady Cats in Big Spring for the Bi-District title. After a hard-fought game, the Lady Bucks fell at the hands of the Lady Cats by a final score of 14-2 in six innings.

Golf season over for high school Bucks

The Alpine High School golf teams completed their season this week at the regional tournament in Baird. On one of the toughest courses, they shot some of their best scores. No one will advance to the state tournament, but there were some great things that happened to build on for next year.

Canaba named assistant athletic director

Head softball and volleyball coach Troy Canaba has been named assistant athletic director of Operations at Sul Ross State University. “I’m excited about the position,” said head Coach Troy Canaba. “I want to thank President Gallego and our athletic director Amanda Workman for the opportunity and vote of confidence.” Canaba will help oversee daily operations of selected sports programs and coordinate various administrative functions within the department. He’ll assist in fundraising efforts, public relations, alumni liaison, recruitment endeavors, and procurement of equipment, as well as provide input to strategic decisions that affect growth and maintenance of athletic facilities. “Troy has shown tremendous leadership inside the department,” said Athletic Director Amanda Workman. “His student-athletes experience success both on the field and in the classroom. This year, he expressed a willingness to join the administrative staff and he has been a great asset since joining.” Canaba has coached the volleyball team since 2017, leading the Lobos to the American Southwest Conference tournament semifinals in 2021. He has guided softball since 2016, picked up his 100th win during the current season, and has reached the conference tournament in each of the last five seasons.
