Marfa High School junior Ayden Alvarez had a goal. He and his coaches set it last year when making it to the UIL State Track and Field Meet was still something to chase, something to work toward, something to build a season around.

The Alpine Lady Bucks varsity softball team may have exited in the second round of the playoffs, falling 4-2 to Canadian in a hard-fought, single-game showdown, but not before capping a season defined by Alpine grit, hard-earned growth, and a championship standard.

The Alpine Fightin’ Bucks varsity baseball team’s postseason run came to a close this weekend in Kermit after just one round, but not before a season that saw the team transform from early struggles into District Champions.

The newly crowned 2026 District Champion Alpine Fightin’ Bucks varsity baseball team is on a tear. Riding a seven-game win streak, the Bucks will travel to Kermit for a neutral-site matchup against the Coahoma Bulldogs (10-12-1) in the first round of the playoffs this weekend.

Multiple Marathon Mustangs earned hardware at the Area track meet recently, allowing them to advance to the Regional competition. Kaden Lees earned two first-place finishes in both the 1600-meters and the 800-meter races. He was also a part of the 4x400 relay that placed fourth. Annaliese West advances in the 300-meter hurdles with her thirdplace finish, and she also finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles. Sadie Carter will be advancing in the 100-meter dash with her third- place finish. She also competed in the 200-meter dash and the long jump, where she placed fifth in both events. Teegan Wheeten, Marco Briones, and Joe David Gonzales were the other members of the 4x400-meter relay team that placed fourth and will advance to Regionals. Gonzales also advanced with his thirdplace 400-meter race and fourth-place long jump. Melody Aguilar will advance in the discus with her fourth-place win, and Izabella Briones advances in the 800-meter race, 400-meter race, 100-meter dash, and the long jump, placing first in both the 800 and 400 and second in the 100 and long jump.

The Alpine Lady Bucks varsity softball team came out swinging and never let up, taking down Lamesa in two straight games, 11-1 and 5-1, to claim the Bi-District Championship and punch their ticket to the Area round of the playoff s. For Alpine, the series win carried a little extra meaning.

The Alpine Lady Bucks varsity softball squad wrapped up the regular season with a pair of tough tests over the last week, using both games as a springboard into the postseason despite falling to Big Spring and Monahans in their final outings.

The Alpine Fightin’ Bucks golf team hit the links in Abilene on Monday and Tuesday of last week for the Regional tournament, where they finished with a combined two-day total of 709, placing 14th. Day one had the team in 10th place overall, but our golfers put up impressive numbers despite the team ranking.
