Dear Editor, I read with interest your article on the Border Wall (“Border wall outcries fall on deaf ears,” Vol. 135, No. 25, 06/18/2026). The article almost exclusively focused on the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Mark Wayne Mullin, and his refusal to revoke his waiver of federal laws, which is allowing the construction of the wall. I don’t know whether you reported that this issue came before a committee in the House. The vote was lopsided, with Republican congressmen voting against Democratic efforts to block the wall through both the state park and Big Bend. The Republicans control both houses of Congress and could, if they chose, stop the wall.

Alpine native Stephen Wood, who owns Sky Island Culinary with his wife Elizabeth, happily shared his go-to recipe for a sweet ending. Always a great friend to the Avalanche, Wood’s culinary expertise is well known in the Big Bend, where he and his wife do popups from time to time, but their main work (at least when hunting season isn’t in full swing) is catering. Wood is also well known in hunting circles, where he cooks up a feast each day for hungry hunters after they’ve been trailing game all day. And what better way to end a long, hard day than with something sweet? Here he shares his version of peach cobbler that is sure to make anyone smile.
