Texas public schools are relentlessly accountable to the state and their communities, but the state is rarely accountable back to its schools. This power imbalance curtails schools’ ability to actualize their community’s vision for their children, particularly in rural Texas.

“Seriously, you really don’t have to eat what I cook.” — Standing offer to my children at mealtime. Thanksgiving really deserves more respect.

The City of Alpine Building Department is pleased to announce recent updates to our zoning ordinance, reflecting several years of collaboration with residents, builders, and community stakeholders. These changes were made in response to the growing demand for affordable housing and smaller single-family home options within our city limits.

Sul Ross State University has entered a new era of academic expansion, innovation, and transformation. Over the past year, the university has launched more than 60 new degree programs, developed over 300 new courses, and reorganized its academic structure to strengthen its role as a leader in higher education across West Texas.

As a licensed pilot, granted one who hasn’t taken the controls of an aircraft in many years, I can still relate to da Vinci’s intoxicating longing for flight.

Traditions are hallmarks of most holidays, but they’re particularly prominent during celebrations that fall at the end of the year. The customs people hold dear are among the many factors that set the holiday season apart. It’s why we eat turkey when giving thanks or kiss under the mistletoe.

As November arrives and with Thanksgiving on the horizon, we’re reminded of the importance of slowing down, counting our blessings, and giving thanks. In our schools and throughout our community, there is so much to be grateful for. Each day in Alpine ISD, we see excellence actualized, learning in motion, and our community coming together to support our children.
