Vernon “Mac” McIntyre Morrow

Vernon “Mac” McIntyre Morrow, of Alpine, passed away peacefully and painlessly on Jan. 16. Mac was born on March 23, 1949, in Alpine, and spent most of his life living and working in Brewster County. He was preceded in death by his parents Keith and Janette Morrow, his eldest son Michael McGregor Morrow, and youngest son William Wetzel Morrow. Mac is survived by his sister Jan Skaggs, brother William “Mo” Morrow, children Benjamin Morrow, Katie Henson, Shannon Morrow, Chisum Morrow, and Philip Morrow. Mac also had had two nephews, two nieces, sixteen grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren at the time of his death.

Billy Gene Roberts, 82, better known to everyone as Ike Roberts from Marathon, entered eternal rest on Jan. 29. Ike was born November 26, 1940, in Alpine to Travis and Polly Roberts. He was raised in Marathon and grew up working on the family ranch and the Catto-Gage Ranch. He attended Sul Ross State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration.

Elena Rios Fierro, age 80, of Alpine, passed away on Jan. 27, in El Paso. Elena was born on June 12,1942 to Ines and Lucia Rios in Paso San Antonio, Manuel Benavides, Chihuahua. She married Felipe S. Fierro, Sr. and was the mother of Daniel N. Rios, Jr., Retired Brewster County Clerk Berta Rios-Martinez, Felipe S. Fierro, Jr., and Teresa F. Chavez.

It is with great sadness that the family of Suzano Martinez Carrillo announces his peaceful passing into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, Jan. 27. Suzano was born on May 24, 1944, in Alpine, to Sabas and Francisca Carrillo. He married Carmen Valenzuela, and together, they raised four children in El Paso.

Thomas Leyva, 34, of Alpine, passed away from complications of chronic medical conditions on Jan. 22. Thomas was born to Arturo Leyva and Naomi Natividad in Alpine on Dec. 16, 1988. Thomas graduated from Alpine High School in 2007 and he earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Sul Ross State University in 2015. He worked at Judy’s Bread and Breakfast for the last several years, a place he felt very comfortable and loved.

Palma Beckett

Palma Jean Clark Fessenden Beckett was born on March 20, 1936, in Ringgold, LA and died Jan. 5, in Maggie Valley, NC. She was the daughter of Al and Marguerite Cook Clark of Ringgold. Palma was really bright and talented and had a wicked sense of humor. She was gifted with perfect pitch and a photographic memory and was a music major at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, LA where she sang in the a cappella choir. When Palma left Northwestern, she moved to the big city of Ft. Worth. Her work life was primarily in technical industries, including American Cyanamide and Lockheed Martin. While at Lockheed, she was the administrative assistant to the VP. In this position, she quickly learned new computer programs and she was asked to teach the new programs to others, which were used to create technical presentations for international participants. When Palma decided she wanted to master new things it happened, because she willed it to be so.
