Wilmuth McCarty Skiles, 91, of Langtry and Midland, passed away on Nov. 20. Wilmuth was born in 1931 in Mertzon, to Tillman and Ruby Rosser McCarty and lived her childhood at Mertzon. Following high school graduation, she attended Sul Ross State University where she met Jack Skiles, of Langtry. They married on Sept. 1, 1951, in Mertzon. She obtained a B.S. degree in 1952 and an M.A. degree in 1958.

Dorothy “Dottie” Hocker Smith died peacefully in her home in Alpine on Saturday, Nov. 12 after a long battle with ALS. She was surrounded by her family and her loving caregivers. Born April 4, 1943, to Walter and Pansy Hocker in Corpus Christi, she graduated from Irvin High School in El Paso before enrolling at Sul Ross State College in Alpine. At Sul Ross, she met her future husband, Milton R. Smith, Jr of Alpine and they married in May of 1963. Together they moved to College Station where Milton attended graduate school at Texas A&M, and Dottie enrolled to continue her undergraduate studies.

Born on March 28, 1927, in Oberlin, La, Julie grew up in Eunice, La, where she was the oldest of 11. Julie passed away Nov. 1. She played basketball and sewed for her family. At the age of 21, she moved to Houston, where she taught dance lessons at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio. One of her students became the love of her life and she would marry Tom Knight in 1951. They lived in several places before settling in Pearland to raise their three children.

On Nov. 14, 2022, Aurie Mitchell West was called home to her Lord and Savior at the age of 84. Aurie was born on November 15, 1937, to William Hayes Mitchell Sr. and Adele Crain Mitchell of Marfa. Marfa was where she made her lifetime home with the love of her life, Guy Gene West. Aurie met Gene at Bloys Campmeeting and they were married on Sept. 8, 1954. Together they continued Aurie’s family’s heritage, and she became a fifth-generation cattle rancher in the state of Texas, and fourth generation in Presidio County while raising their five children.

Katharine Ann Crockett Davis was a beautiful person inside and out. She was a gifted concert pianist whose rich alto voice was often lifted to praise Jesus Christ. Katharine took her final bow at home in Alpine, Texas on October 21, 2022. She was surrounded by her family who will especially miss her wisdom, her smile, her turkey and gravy, and her infectious laugh.
