Alpine presents photo contest

The City of Alpine will present the 2022 #AlpineTXPhoto Contest. This is the contest’s 12th year, named for the #AlpineTXPhoto hashtag that can be used to browse hundreds of previous contest photos on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

In the July 14 issue on page 1, the name of the new City of Alpine building official is Andrew DeVaney. Council, Ward 1, Judy Stokes and Council, Ward 5, Jerry Johnson did not voice full support for raising the proposed tax rate. City Attorney Rod Ponton recommended a small tax increase annually.

Observatory works with Catalyst Midstream Partners to protect dark skies

West Texas and the Big Bend are known for their starry night skies, made possible in part by ongoing efforts to preserve them. Recently, McDonald Observatory and the non-profit organization Texan by Nature recognized the efforts of Catalyst Midstream Partners, a joint venture between Howard Energy Partners and Devon Energy Corporation, to reduce light emissions at their County Line processing plant near Orla.

Nonprofits benefit from Philanthropy Days

With limited resources for nonprofits in West Texas, organizations are often at a loss for support and training. Most travel to Lubbock or Houston or even further for classes, conferences, and connections. Well, not anymore! West Texas Rural Philanthropy Days is now a regular event in Alpine.

Why waste water?

I would like to hear the reasoning for why the Alpine Elementary School, Alpine High School, and the golf course run their high volume sprinklers at hot times of the day when the strong winds are frequently evaporating a lot of that water before it even hits the grass.

Thought I was saving money by napping

Nothing spoils a Sunday afternoon nap quicker than waking up to a text. Especially one like this. “Hi, it’s your credit card company. Did you just make this purchase with your card ending in 1234? Company: (I never heard of them.) Approved: $350.47 Text back ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to protect your account.”
