County approves permits for Terlingua chili cookoffs
Brewster County Commissioners Court held its regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 27, and the court approved the permitting process for the upcoming Terlingua international chili cookoffs. Commissioners also approved tax collection agreements and other contracts with various local non-profit groups.

Sul Ross receives funding for anthropology program
The Center for Big Bend Studies at Sul Ross State University received $1 million in funding from the Department of Education through the office of U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, Texas Congressional Dist. 23.

I walk past it with every trip to my toolbox for another wrench - the tool I really needed when I thought the one in my hand would work. It’s a short journey through the door separating my workshop where the toolbox resides and the garage where my antique road warriors slumber.
Lady Bucks move to 2-0 in District
The Lady Bucks sported a 13-9 record as District play began on Sept. 24 in Alpine against the Tornillo Lady Coyotes. District play is what the girls have been preparing for all year, motivated by last year’s second place finish to the Presidio Lady Blue Devils.
Illegals apprehended
On Sept. 24 a joint operation between Brewster County deputies and U.S. Border Patrol agents resulted in the apprehension of five illegal aliens from Mexico, and the arrest of Emanuel Hosea Hafford. Hafford was discovered to be smuggling the suspects on U.S. Highway 385 south of Marathon.

Water - what to do with it, and what do we do without it? I am a fourth generation rancher in Brewster County. While I have only lived and ranched here for the last 20 years, I see first hand every day I am at the ranch what water means to our environment, lifestyle, business, and our very survival.
