Fritters - not just for apples

Body
If you have ever grown your own garden and planted zucchini, you know that it can get out of hand very quickly. One plant, if taken care of properly, makes enough zucchini to feed a family of four with plenty of leftovers to share with friends and family or even neighbors. These plants are prolific, and besides preparing this overabundance by freezing some of it or serving by sauteing or deep frying, there is another way to enjoy it fried when combined with another garden favorite.

Fatality in national park

Body
On July 21 at 7:45 p.m., Big Bend National Park’s Communications Center received notice of a fatality along the Chimneys Trail. Rangers responded, and a deceased 75-year-old male from Houston was located approximately one-half mile from the trailhead. There was no obvious cause of death. The Chimneys Trail is a moderately-difficult, five-mile round trip hike to a series of prominent volcanic formations in the western desert of the park. Summer temperatures in Big Bend are extreme. Temperatures over most of the park reach 100+ degrees by late morning, and increase to exceedingly dangerous levels until long after sunset. On Thursday afternoon, the temperatures along the Chimneys Trail exceeded 104 degrees.

PET OF THE WEEK

Body
Alpine Humane Society Pet of the Week is Deano. He is about seven weeks old, and ready to find a happy home. Kittens do very well if adopted in pairs, and there are plenty of great companions who could join Deano in your home.
