Sul Ross State graduate and volleyball/softball standout Annikka Canaba has been named the 2020-21 American Southwest Conference Woman of the Year, and will represent the ASC on the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year award ballot.

The Cowboys sit three games back from the Tucson Saguaros in their division with fewer than a dozen games to play in the regular season. A two-game series against the Roswell Invaders began with a close loss, 12-11.

One of the few players returning from the 2019 championship team is Calvin Graves, an outfielder who is serving as captain for the 2021 squad. Said Head Coach Sean Persky, “Graves has a lot of baseball knowledge, and understands what we do here in Alpine.

Sul Ross Athletics hired Oscar Ray Jimenez as its Athletics Business Coordinator, and he joined the staff on July 6. “I am very excited to begin this opportunity since I see this as a great fit for me,” said Jimenez.

Rain canceled the first game of a two-game road series against the Garden City Wind beginning July 14. In game two, the Cowboys offense rallied out of the gate, scoring nine runs in the first inning, and finishing with a mammoth 24-2 win.

Alpine High School volleyball coach Rick Garcia said this season would pick up where it left off last year. “Losing in Bi-Districts was a heartbreaker, so we have some unfinished business this coming year,” he said.

From Andrew Fregia’s perspective, “Good things are going to happen.” He believes this young team is ultra competitive, and when any group has the same goals and the work ethic it takes, success is born.

Alpine Middle School students AJ Llanez and Alec Ramos traveled to the U.S. Specialty Sports Association baseball World Series in Dallas last week with their team, the West Texas Flying Squirrels.

A win on July 13 now puts the Alpine Cowboys fi ve games back in the division. While it seems like a small number, the Cowboys need to rally to repeat 2019. According to Coach Sean Persky, the season has definitely been up and down.
