Senior setter/middle hitter Annika Canaba was named American Southwest Conference Offensive Player of the Week after helping volleyball to a 2-1 conference record this past week. “Annika is off to a great start,” said Head Coach Troy Canaba.
The Fighting Alpine Buck faithful turned out in Fort Stockton in carloads last Friday night at a windy Panther Stadium. Too bad for the Buck fans that Alpine had no answer for a strong Fort Stockton run game, and quarterback Dom Aguilar’s five-touchdown night, falling 46-10. Once again Alpine was playing up a classification in rival Fort Stockton, hailing from 2-4A Division DI.
What started out as a train wreck in Wink last week ended on a high note. The Alpine Lady Buck varsity volleyball team traveled last Tuesday to face in a nondistrict dual against the Wink Wildcats and the Klondike Cougars.
Alpine fell at home Friday night to the El Paso Jefferson Silver Foxes, 44-27, behind quarterback Nathan Alcala’s big fivetouchdown night for the first Buck loss of the season. This past weekend Coach Cory Cason and her Lady Bucks placed first in the Wink Wildcat Invitational. Sophomore Tannin Ritchie finished sev enth overall, freshman Hope Dominguez came in 10th, junior Vanessa Rice placed 14th, and seniors Lauren Penders and Elizabeth Uranga finishing 16th and 21st respectively.
Coach Rick Garcia and his Lady Bucks had a warm homecoming with a win over the Crane Lady Birds, 3-2, last Tuesday night (20-25, 25-18, 25-14, 26-28, and 15-11). Garcia and his Lady Bucks returned home to the Gallego Center after two weeks on the road against Pecos, Wall, and various duals and tournaments around West Texas, and were rewarded by a narrow victory.
