Tomi Jo McDaniel
Tomi Jo McDaniel was born in Sweetwater, Texas, in 1937. After attending Abilene Christian College, she moved to Odessa, where she met Richard McDaniel and married in 1960. There they lived and worked until 1973, when they moved to Alpine so Richard could finish college at Sul Ross State University. Tomi started her Alpine career at the SRSU print shop, followed by the Texas Highway Department, and then she went back to SRSU to work at the physical plant. Her most recent and final job was with the City of Alpine, working as the Financial Director for 21 years. She collected many lifelong friends at every one of her jobs.
Tomi McDaniel passed away on March 2, 2026, in El Paso. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard McDaniel, grandson Gavin Hearon, and great-grandson Sterling Hardy.
She deeply loved her family, friends, fishing and camping, dancing and music,
and her “beloved Alpine.” She touched many lives in her 88 years. She was a great conversationalist and loved visiting with anyone who needed to chat. She was spicy, kind, independent, artsy fartsy, and loved nature and people. She will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched.
Tomi was one “hell of a” mother, granny, aunt, great-grandmother, mother- in-law, and friend. She is survived by her two daughters, Edye and Dara; bonus daughter, Julie Shaddox; grandchildren, April, Richard, Patrick, Buddy, and Amy; great-grandchildren, Owen, Cole, Seth, Summer, Madison, and Mason. A Celebration of Life will be held on July 4th, Tomi’s favorite holiday.
