Astronaut Alan Shepard, center, who hopes to walk on the moon tomorrow, was greeted by a large number of Big Bend residents when he and others in the space program arrived at the Presidio County Airport on April 1, 1964. Debbie McIvor of Fort Davis, right, showed the reserve champion Hereford steer at the recent Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth. Debbie’s first place junior calf, named Festus, weighed 1,040 pounds and was bred by J.W. Espy near Fort Davis. At left is Dr. Herman Purdy of University Park, Pa., show judge, and in center is Pam Mimms, Texas Hereford Queen.
