Early voting for the May 6 general election is complete and Saturday is the last chance to cast your vote for the Single Member District 6 Trustee for the Alpine ISD school board, and for the Ward 5 Alpine City Council seat.

Jan. 1 Black-eyed Pea Off, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Terlingua Ghostown porch. Entry fees are $10 with peas due promptly at 2 p.m. Anyone may partake of a bowl of peas to usher in “good luck” for the new year for $10, and it comes with a bowl and spoon along with cornbread until it is gone. All proceeds benefit the Terlingua school graduation scholarships.

Texas State Parks turn 100

2023 is the centennial year for state parks in Texas, and parks across the state are hosting festivals and celebrations to commemorate this milestone. Locally, Davis Mountains State Park, located just northwest of Fort Davis is hosting their own celebration.

Ponton honored with a special resolution

Alpine City Attorney Rod Ponton was honored on the floor of the Texas Senate on May 22 with a special resolution. This senate resolution SR 626 was co-sponsored by Texas senators Roland Gutierrez and Cesar Blanco. The resolution commemorated Pontons’ distinguished 41year legal career devoted to the needs of Far West Texas. “I am honored by the resolution and will continue to advocate for the needs of Far West Texas,” noted Ponton.

TxDot’s international bridge is now officially open

Community leaders, and local, state, federal, and international officials were on hand for the offi cial ceremonial ribbon cutting for the new Presidio International Bridge that is owned and operated by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). The ceremony marked the official doubling of the capacity at the border crossing.
