LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Body
TxDOT is working to raise motorist and bicycle safety awareness on our Texas Highways in the Tri-County region. Bicycle graphic caution signs and Share the Road signs are being installed on the Texas highways between Alpine, Marfa, Ft. Davis, Balmorhea, and the McDonald Observatory. Bicyclists on a State Highway or County roadway have the same rights and duties applicable to a driver operating a motor vehicle on these roadways. The white line on a roadway is called the fog line, there are no designated bike lanes on any State Highway or County Road in the Tri-County region, these are improved shoulders, not bike lanes. A bicyclist can legally ride in the roadway without impeding traffic if hazards exist on the shoulder precluding the bicyclist from safely riding on the shoulder. For a driver of a motor vehicle, the safe passing distance rule of thumb when passing a bicyclist is 3 feet if traveling at or below 45mph and 6 feet if traveling over 45mph. Slow down and move over. Wait a second to pass and only pass when safe without affecting oncoming traffic. View the bicyclist as you would any other slow-moving vehicle using the road. With a headwind or crosswind, the bicyclist cannot hear you approaching, especially if you are traveling at 70mph or in excess of the posted speed limit. Give the bicyclist a friendly honk to let them know you are approaching. At 70mph a bicyclist has approximately 2 seconds to react to a motor vehicle. Be courteous, be friendly, and allow others to use the road you are traveling on. Be a little patient, in a collision the motor vehicle will win, the death of a bicyclist is not worth a few seconds of your time. Please Share the Road. Please help to prevent deaths on Texas roadways. David D. Dobler Ft. Davis, Texas
