Portions of Big Bend to be closed in October

According to a recent press release, the Deadhorse Mountains, including the surrounding areas of Dagger Flat Road and Old Ore Road will be closed beginning October 3. The first two weeks of October, the National Park Service (NPS) in collaboration with Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) will be conducting aerial surveys and removal of nonnative aoudad to help protect the native desert bighorn sheep.

Lifelong resident of Alpine, Elizabeth McLean, age 96, passed away on September 24. She was born to the late Kurt and Anna Lange in Alpine, on November 17, 1926. Elizabeth attended Alpine Schools and Graduated in 1943. She then attended Sul Ross State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science McLean in 1943. She is Survived by her two children, Clinnell McLean (Jerry) and Marshall Lange McLean. Grandchildren: Kiley McComb (Valerie) Krystel Mc-Comb Kiser (Aaron), Kasey McComb (Erin), Jody McLean, Wyatt McLean, (Alondra) Garrett McLean and Jillian Torres (William). Greatgrandchildren, Amanda McLean, Kaylan Kiser, degree and a Master of Education.

Diana Gay Martin Thomas, 77 of Alpine, passed away September 15. She was born May 4, 1946, in Cuero, the daughter of the late William Daniel and Estelle Martin. On July 2, 1964, she married Walter H. Thomas in Midland.

Dallas may be a long 500-mile drive from Alpine, but every year Visit Big Bend makes that trip and takes a little piece of Far West Texas to the State Fair. The DFW area is a major contributor to visitation in the Big Bend region and the staff of Visit Big Bend, along with several contract workers, man a booth for the full 24 days of the Fair.

Fightin’ Bucks win first district game

The Alpine Fightin’ Bucks faced Odessa Compass Academy on Friday, September 22 in Alpine’s first district game this season, winning 28-21. Played at Ratliff stadium, this game showcased the potential for game turnover in each quarter.
Last Friday’s pep rally themed “Soccer Moms vs BBQ Dads” rallied the Fightin’ Bucks to persevere and come back from a deficit score to overcome Odessa Compass 28-21 in Friday night’s game, the Bucks first district game of the season. Sul Ross Lady Lobos calling it a comeback

The Sul Ross Lady Lobo volleyball team took on Le Tourneau University Saturday afternoon at the Pete P. Gallego Center. Although it took a fourth set to conquer the Yellowjackets, the Lobos were able to pull it off.
