Bucks are 5-5 heading into district play

After a crushing game last Tuesday against Seminole, the Alpine Bucks varsity took on the Monahans Loboes at Kokernot Field the following night. Alpine would open up the scoring in the first inning on an error by Monahans, scoring two runs.

Billings awarded Eagle Scout achievement

Zane Billings, son of Dr. Adrian and Susan Billings and a member of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 41 earned the rank of Eagle Scout at a board of review on Nov. 12, 2022. Billings was recognized for his achievement recently at a Court of Honor ceremony held on Sunday, March 5 at the American Legion Post 79. He was presented his Eagle Award by Scoutmaster Hector Holguin. Eagle Scout is the highest rank one can reach in the BSA. Only 5% of all scouts who join reach the ranking of Eagle Scout. To attain this ranking, a scout must earn at least 21 merit badges, fulfill leadership roles, display outdoor skills, demonstrate by example the Scout Oath and Law, and complete a comprehensive service project in the community.

School board talks attendance and grant awards

The regularly scheduled meeting of the Alpine ISD Board of Trustees was held on March 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the AISD administration building. The focus of the meeting was attendance improvement and grant awards to help make up funding shortages not allocated by the state. Board members Haley Babb and Dr. Adrian Billings were not in attendance.

Lady Bucks drop two, open district play, Friday

Odessa High pitcher Jaylyn Calderon wasn’t fazed by the wind and dirt that prevailed Saturday at Sul Ross State University. Calderon threw 100 pitches, scattered four hits while striking out 10 and walking three as the Bronchos traveled to the high country and downed Alpine, 10-0. Alpine pitcher Hannah Juett kept the Lady Bucks, currently 9-6 within striking distance much of the game as Odessa who sit 5-9 on the season only managed single runs in the second, third and fourth innings before a 4-run outburst in the top of the seventh put the game away. Juett threw 116 pitches with seven strikeouts and three walks.

This past Friday, the Alpine Lady Bucks track and field teams took their marks in Monahans, placing in the runner-up position, just two points shy of the winning host team. The girls beat out Midland Greenwood, Seminole, Crane, Fort Stockton, Presidio and Pecos.

The Alpine Fightin’ Bucks baseball team took on the Eunice Cardinals last Friday night, in a close game with a walk-off by Jace Canaba in the bottom of the seventh to claim the victory. Alec Ramos would take the W on the hill for the Bucks, going four innings, allowing four runs on six hits and striking out five.

We have been busy at City Hall over the last couple of months. From having four strategic planning prioritization Town Hall meetings to attending meetings with our U.S. Congressman, Tony Gonzales as well as other individuals and entities in regard to grants that we may be eligible to receive. Based on the six Town Hall meetings we had this past fall, the number one concern of the residents in attendance is our water and wastewater. The wastewater treatment plant repairs and overhaul were estimated to cost 4.6 million dollars last year at this time.

Elena Peña Gallego, 94, a long-time resident of Alpine, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 8, 2023. Born in Fort Stockton, Texas, on August 18, 1928, to Martín Peña and Cecilia Paredes Peña, she was the third of four surviving children - and the last of her generation.
