Alpine’s Xtreme All-Star 12U softball team members were pumped up and ready to hit a homer with super sweet deals at their bake sale fundraiser on June 18 outside of Morrison True Value in Alpine. The team is raising funds to cover travel costs to attend an All-Star girls softball tournament in Lubbock. Alpine ISD Board of Trustees held a special meeting on June 20 that included the selection of Jarrett Vickers as the new high school principal and Curtis Wubbena as the new elementary school principal.

The City of Alpine held its regularly scheduled council meeting on June 21, and watering restrictions and ongoing utility bill issues were some of the main items discussed. Water usage due to drought conditions was a main cause of concern for City Manager Megan Antrim, indicating that capacity was at 90%, and two water wells were not functioning due to pump and equipment issues, thus reducing the amount of water being pulled from the wells to meet demand.

Brazos Quinton Davis of Iraan, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2022, in Reno, Nev., after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Brazos was born Jan.

John Charles Conners was born on Oct. 22, 1933, in Rio Grande City, Texas, and passed away on June 18, 2022.

Benjamin Macias III of San Jose, Calif., passed away April 6, 2022. Services for Ben will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2022, at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Alpine, Texas. Rosary will be at 9:30 a.m., followed by the mass.

Catherine “Cathy” Louise Rainer left this world on June 18, 2022, to be with our Lord surrounded by her loved ones. Cathy was born on July 21, 1944, to John Larkin and Jennel Scott in El Paso, Texas.

Ruth Marie Hess Goss went home to be with her Lord and Savior on June 3, 2022. She was born on March 1, 1934, to Leonard Mark Hess and Mary Antoinette Rodesney.

The Center for Big Bend Studies at Sul Ross State University has been awarded a grant for $12,500 from the Cooperative Research and Training Programs of the National Park System, Department of the Interior.
