The City of Alpine held its regularly scheduled meeting on Feb. 7 at 5:30 in council chambers.

The 2023 Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering Youth Poetry Contest garnered 110 entries in five levels. Contestants included students from Alpine Christian School, Alpine ISD, Fort Davis ISD, Valentine ISD, Marathon ISD, Balmorhea ISD, Austin ISD, Uvalde Classical Academy, and Columbia Elementary School in Louisiana, along with several home schools in West Texas, Central Texas, Ohio, and Alaska. Levels were broken down as follows. Level one is Kinder 5 through Second grade, Level two is grades three and four, Level three is grades five through six, Level four is grades seven through eight, and Level five is grades nine through 12.

Alpine FFA student Collette Sharron opened this past weekend’s San Angelo Lamb and Goat show by singing the National Anthem. Sharron also sang at this year’s Big Bend Livestock show and sale and she’s been invited to sing the anthem at the San Antonio Lamb and Goat show as well.

WEEK Alpine Humane Society Pet of the Week is Sansa. Sansa is energetic, playful, curious, intelligent, and cute as heck.

In what activities did you participate in high school? I participated in marching band from freshman year to my sophomore year, then my junior year and senior year I joined flags. I am participating in one act my senior year, and I was part of the yearbook group my whole high school career.

Dear Neil: My dad lives on property west of Austin. He has lots of mountain laurels growing there and we’d like to transplant some to our landscape.
