Ten sixth graders who had little to no experience in the game of volleyball came together this year and completely swept away expectations. These local students from Alpine ISD lost the first game that they played at the beginning of the season, but according to the parent of one of the young players, Maribel Ramirez, “They lost that first game, and it was like they had a fire lit under them.” They seemed to simply refuse to lose another game.

On October 20, the Alpine Fightin’ Bucks will face the Compass Academy team from Odessa again for Alpine’s Homecoming district game. The last time that Alpine played the Odessa team was for their first district game of the season on September 22.

Although only a junior, the Alpine Fightin’ Buck’s wide receiver Logan Smith has shined on the field this season. The Avalanche caught up with Smith to get an idea of how he prepares and what it takes to have an outstanding football season.

The Alpine Runnin’ Bucks competed in both the boys and girls cross country races in Odessa on October 5, with the varsity girls bringing home a second-place overall finish and the varsity boys bringing in a fifth-place overall finish. The girls’ biggest hurdle in the district is Odessa Compass. Likewise, the boys’ team faces that same hurdle but with the addition of Presidio and Crane.

The Marathon to Marathon (M2M) celebrates its 20th race this Saturday. This annual event began in 2003 and has been going strong ever since. Attracting locals and visitors alike, this Boston Marathon qualifying race is one of the largest events Marathon hosts, and upwards of over 500 racers descend upon the small community in West Texas, doubling its size with runners and volunteers.

The Alpine Lady Bucks, now with a sevenwin streak and remaining first in the district, faced the Tornillo Coyotes last Tuesday and the Wink Wildcats on Saturday. In the first set of the district home game against Tornillo the Lady Bucks won 25-12, 25-11 in the second set, and 25-5 in the third. This resulted in an Alpine win of 3-0, on their home court.

Coming off a two-win streak after last week’s victory against Tornillo, Alpine entered the arena with Crane for the first time this season on Friday for their latest district home game. Despite an equal footing standoff in the first and second quarters, in the end, the Fightin’ Bucks lost to the opposing team 7-39.
