Dear Neil: I’m concerned about my backyard. The photo with the tennis ball is St. Augustine “carpetgrass”, while the other photo is a mix of St. Augustine and bermuda. Runners of much of the lawn pull up easily. I’m worried that the lawn is dead. I have bluebonnets and other wildflowers in this area, so I’m concerned about bringing sod and topsoil in until we get spring rains.

Emilee Charlesworth, daughter of Brent and Leslea Charlesworth recently won the 2023 Art of the Cowgirl Breakaway Roping at the Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Center in Queen Creek, AZ. Placing first in the short go, Charlesworth won with a time of 3.06 seconds, .28 seconds ahead of the second-place contender.

Since being hired as the new Alpine ISD Superintendent, Dr. Michelle Rinehart has brought with her a true “hands across the water” approach to her position. Alpine ISD, in collaboration with other community organizations and businesses have garnered grants for a new proposed childcare center. This new, and muchneeded childcare center is set to open in Alpine this summer. Alpine ISD will be receiving $500,000 in grant funding for this purpose. The grants from the Texas Workforce Commission and Workforce Solutions Borderplex will help launch the center with up to 50 new childcare spots for children aged six weeks through three years. The center will feed into the PreK-3 program already in place at Alpine ISD.

The City of Alpine along with Alpine ISD have called for a General Election to be held on Saturday, May 6. The City of Alpine began taking applications to file for positions on the City Council on Jan. 18 and will accept applications until Feb. 17, at 5 p.m.

Two former Alpine High School athletes were honored and remembered Friday night with the dedication of the new basketball court at Alpine High School. The court was named in honor of Brian Wilson – Class of 1991 – and Jill Stice – Class of 1994.
