For 50 years, La Nortena tamale factory has served the community of Pecos, Texas. Located at 211 E. Third Street, it has been family owned and operated by the Castillo family since its’ inception. At one point, the family even owned and operated a brick-and-mortar Mexican restaurant and the tamale factory produced what it does best; tamales.

The 394th judicial district: justice pioneer

The 394th Judicial District in the state of Texas is comprised of five counties. Those counties include Brewster, Jeff Davis, Presidio, Culberson, and Hudspeth. This judicial district is overseen by the Honorable Judge Roy B. Ferguson. Twice a year, in all five counties, Judge Ferguson sets about empaneling a grand jury. The jury selection for the second in-person Brewster County grand jury since the pandemic took place last Thursday in the District Courtroom.

City Manager calls attention to upcoming legislation

The Alpine City Council held its’ regularly scheduled meeting Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m. Of importance on the agenda were comments and updates on the city infrastructure as well as upcoming legislation currently introduced during the 88th legislative session in Austin. Councilor Jerry Johnson, Ward 5 was absent due to medical reasons.

Regional beef producers attend seminar

Texas A & M Agrilife Extension in cooperation with Sul Ross’ Range Animal Science Center held its first, of a three-part seminar titled Big Bend Beef 706. This program is funded by the Texas Beef Council and the first session, held this past Saturday, saw around 40 area beef producers attend.

Draft recovery plan available for Mexican long-nosed bat

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is seeking public comments on a draft revised recovery plan for the Mexican long-nosed bat, an endangered migratory bat that travels annually between Mexico and the Southwestern United States to follow the blooming period of flowering agaves and cacti.
