On May 14 three teams from Alpine Middle School robotics competed for the championship round of the Get Excited About Robotics competition sponsored by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Whitacre College of Engineering, Texas Tech University, and SM Energy. One team won Second Place Overall in the Elementary category because they are still fifth graders, and at the same time received Best Themed Award. Alpine senior headed to Ivy League

While thousands of high school seniors across the country vie for a coveted acceptance letter from a top ranked university, Alpine High School senior Itzel Franco got accepted into seven of the nation’s top schools, including Columbia University, a prestigious Ivy League school in New York City.

Utilities director addresses jurisdiction concerns

The City of Alpine held a special meeting on May 10 and extra-territorial jurisdiction problems and building code issues were topics of concern addressed by Director of Public Utilities Keith Segar. Segar told council members there was an ETJ buffer zone in the city that had allowed certain businesses and city residents to obtain city services such as water, but those places were not within the city limits, thus creating a problem for the city’s utilities infrastructure.

Regency Ball coming up Saturday

On Saturday, May 14, Ben and Carrie Karleen will host the second annual West Texas Regency Ball, an evening of English country dancing, live music, and dining. The event will take place at the Kelly Pavilion in Fort Davis from 5-11 p.m.

Alpine Humane Society Pet of the Week is Zora. Zora and her sister Jolie are the zoomiest pair of pups to hit the play yard. Zora is a Pit Bull Terrier mix about eight months old, and she loves to play. She’s young, sweet, incredibly affectionate, and full of energy.

Brewster County Property Values

On May 10, 2022, Brewster County property owners will begin receiving their Notice of Appraised Property Value for 2022. The valuations are based on property value assessments completed by the team of six Brewster County Appraisal District property assessors. All are formally trained and have passed rigorous tests to ensure compliance to processes and procedures dened by the State of Texas. Oversight for the Brewster County Appraisal District employees is provided by the Brewster County Appraisal District Board with representatives from each of the seven taxing entities in Brewster County including Brewster County, the City of Alpine, the Big Bend Regional Hospital District, and the four school districts including Alpine, Marathon and San Vicente ISDs, and Terlingua CSD.
