Council informs on water issues

Editor’s Note: This is part two of a two-part series from last week’s edition. In a continuation of last week’s city council meeting held on Tuesday, May 5, at 5:30 p.m., the City of Alpine concluded that the only step forward was to drill a new well to replace the Roberts 3 well that has failed.

Early voting begins Monday

Early voting for the 2026 primary runoff election begins on Monday, May 18, and will continue through Friday, May 22, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Val Clark Beard Office Complex located at 203 N. 7th Street in Alpine, where voting for all precincts will take place.

Robert Harold Flanders

Robert Harold Flanders died peacefully at his home in Alpine on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at the age of 81. The son of Mary and Hal Flanders, Robert was born in Denver, Colorado, but lived in many places as a child due to his father’s career. Robert was a conscientious objector during the Vietnam War and did his alternative service in Honduras. During this time, he married Rice Flanders. The couple later settled in New England and had two children.

AHS and its Fine Arts successes

This spring, Alpine High School Fine Arts students achieved honors and recognition for their pursuits in both music and theater in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Band students completed their competitive season with a sweepstakes trophy, acquiring the highest score possible for marching, sightreading, and concert performance. Moreover, the clarinet, percussion, and saxophone sections of the band advanced to the State level in solo and ensemble competitions and will be showing in Austin later this month. Director Chuck Wilson is “incredibly proud” of the work his students have put in, saying, “It was an outstanding season. I mean, you can’t get any better than sweepstakes.”
