Stowaway bat returns home

On Friday, July 25, representatives from Austin Bat Refuge in Austin were onsite at McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis to release a big freetail bat back into the wild. Named Hubble after the famous astronomer, he is thought to have accidentally hitched a ride from the Observatory to Austin in some astronomy gear. Big freetail bats do not live in Central Texas but are a common sight in the Big Bend region, where the McDonald Observatory is located.

Backyard Bible begins Monday

Body
An exciting Backyard Bible Club event is coming to Kokernot Park! Hillside Baptist Church, First Baptist Church, and Fuenta de Vida Assembly Church, all of Alpine, are joining together to host a fun adventure similar in style to Vacation Bible School! The Backyard Bible Club will be held at the Kokernot Park Pavilion, August 4-7. Each morning will begin at 9 a.m. and run to Noon for boys and girls in kindergarten through 5th grade. Older students are always welcome to come to volunteer. This year’s Backyard Bible Club theme is MAGNIFIED. Youngsters will learn to see the bigness of God in the smallest of His creation through music, Bible stories, and puppet shows.

Those last words, ‘Ride on Jet’

“Art washes away from the soul, the dust of everyday life.” — Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973), Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist While hanging the painting of a sad, wet dog on the wall in my newly refurbished “music room slash library” last week, words from some 30 years ago came back to me. “You collect some heavy stuff, man.” They were words of Judy Snouffer, about July 1993.

Let’s All Make Alpine Better

Body
One of the great qualities of Alpine is the amount of time and energy that many who live here put into making where we all live, work, learn, and play a better place. It’s one of the reasons we chose Alpine as home. While everything in Alpine may not be exactly how we want it to be, we are blessed with great outdoor spaces and events, a thriving and creative music and arts community, excellent not for profits who support those in need, including our seniors, a wonderful library, terrific schools, a “far from ordinary” university and so much more.

From Pinto Canyon to Mt. Locke: Two rides, one wild west challenge

Body
When West Texas cyclists need a reason to keep their butts in the saddle through the sweltering summer heat, two fall events offer the perfect goal to sweat toward. The Marfa 100 and Cyclefest are regional staples that draw hundreds of cyclists each year, offering scenic routes, serious climbs, and a welcome change in altitude—not to mention attitude.
