John Howard Finley of Alpine passed away Monday, March 25 in El Paso at 87 years old. John was born on December 12, 1936, in Marfa to Mae Howard and Merrit Finley. He will be forever remembered as a great husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. Recalling his childhood, he described it as wild and free. He was full of stories of mischief. It is common for family members to contact 911 and report that their son, daughter, father, or mother is experiencing a mental health crisis and request a police officer. The police department collaborates with mental health professionals and community resources to provide appropriate support and intervention in such cases.

The Alpine Buck and Lady Buck track teams traveled to San Angelo over the weekend for the 65th-annual San Angelo Relays. Facing tough competition in one of the largest track meets in the state, the Alpine Lady Bucks were able to come away with a few medals from the two-day event.

The Alpine Fightin’ Buck baseball team is off to a slow start in district play thus far. Having met up with Crane and Tornillo last week, the Bucks had two hard losses going into their matchup against Stanton on Tuesday, leaving them with a 0-2 record in district play.

The state competitions for high school powerlifting have come to an end and several Alpine competitors exhibited their Alpine Buck spirit by winning top spots and scholarship money. During the regional challenge, Enyssa Fierro, Mia Morris, Madalyn Warren and Owen Thompson qualified and performed well.

Next month the streets of Marathon will be lined with homemade specialty products and food for their new iteration of the farmer’s market. One unique thing about this particular farmer’s market will be its sellers, kids who are learning the ropes of small business, artistry, and salesmanship.
