Fiddler’s Green – The Army Chaplains Service, Part III

Body
FIDDLER’S GREEN With the reorganization of the Army in 1866, 34 chaplains were authorized, 30 to be assigned specific posts, but four to be assigned specifically to the African American regiments, the 9th and 10th Cavalry, and the 24 and 25th Infantry. While their primary duties were to hold Sunday services, officiate at military funerals, and report on the morale of the troops, the four specifically assigned to the Buffalo Soldier regiments had the additional task of providing educational instruction to the troops.
