Alpine’s cultural tradition celebrates Dia de los Muertos

Entering a season of growth and change often calls reflection to mind. History, family, and ancestry play a prominent role in old communities like Alpine. What was once one large cemetery on the west side of town was split into two around 1929. Elm Grove Cemetery and Holy Angels Cemetery are the homes of many souls dating back to the 1800s.
The chapel at Holy Angels Cemetery is a gathering place for friends and family, conveniently positioned at a crossroads just inside the entrance near the end of Old Cemetery Road in Alpine.

Campus improvement on principals’ agendas

Alpine ISD Board of Trustees held its regularly scheduled meeting on Oct. 19, and improvement plans for all three campuses, along with high school construction updates and a financial audit report, drove the discussions.

Directions: Prepare lemon-basil caper sauce and avocado mayo according to directions, mix in a food processor and set aside. Cut off ends and peel yellow onion, discarding outer skin, and finely chop.

Ingredients: 1 yellow onion, finely chopped 6 ounces green kale 2 whole yellow squash, diced into ¼” pieces 4 ounces artichoke hearts, roughly chopped 1-½ pounds ground beef 2 teaspoons lemon pepper 4 ounces feta cheese 4 ounces lemon-basil caper sauce with avocado mayo 4 ounces roasted red peppers, chopped 1-½ teaspoons Italian spice blend with dill added Cooking oil Salt and pepper to taste Ingredients for Lemon Basil Caper Sauce: 2 tablespoons capers, drained and roughly chopped 2 cloves minced garlic 2 tablespoons butter 1 cup half and half 1 cup chicken broth ¼ cup lemon juice 2 tablespoons cornstarch ½ teaspoon ground black pepper 3 tablespoons finely chopped basil Ingredients for Avocado Mayo: ½ ripe avocado 2 tablespoons mayonnaise 1 scallion, finely chopped ½ teaspoon lime zest.
