City discusses illegal gambling

Dark skies were once again in the forefront at the City of Alpine council meeting on April 20. City Manager Erik Zimmer referred to House Bill 4305 and Senate Bill 2133, proposed legislation that would allow the use of hotel/motel occupancy tax funds to help support dark sky initiatives.

I became a licensed tree expert by examination in Illinois in 1975, and a certified arborist in California in 1999. My experience is vast, beginning in Atlanta, Ga., in 1973 and working in 20 states and five Canadian provinces, retiring last year.

Over-28 baseball tryouts soon

The Alpine Over-28 Baseball Team will hold tryouts on Thursday, April 22, and Sunday, April 25 at 6:30 p.m. at 609 Mountainside Drive in Alpine.

Juniors shine in District

Congratulations are in order for Alpine’s junior track and field team as they won District in both seventh and eighth grades on April 10. The seventh grade girls earned an astonishing 269 total points in the event, with Kermit being the next closest with 78 points.

Tennis teams headed for Regionals

Alpine’s boys and girls high school tennis teams are both champions after the District 4-3AAA tennis tournament on April 14 at Fort Stockton. First place individual awards were in order for the mixed doubles team of Derek Schwierjohn and Itzel Franco.

Girls track wins championship in Denver City

The Alpine Track and Field Lady Bucks won the Area championship on April 15 at Denver City. Thirty total competitors will travel for the District 3A and 4A Regional championship. Besides Alpine, other teams competing included Friona, Brownfield, Denver City, Muleshoe, Lamesa, Littlefield, Tornillo, Anthony, Kermit, and Presidio.
