We would like to thank the community and visitors from all over the country for joining us for the 51st Fourth of July Celebration hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Alpine. Thanks to all of our parade participants.

Getting ready for a summer trip has me pumped. Not just any trip, you understand. Touring in old cars, and discovering classic places to eat became my favorite combination of things to do many years ago.

Sitting in my home office I am greeted by a cool breeze coming through my open window and the sweet sounds of summer outside. It’s late June, which used to be peak bike-hiking season for kids — but now it’s mostly adults who go on long rides on their expensive high-tech bikes.

My wife and I would like to thank the Alpine Golf Association for inviting us to play in this year’s Couples Tournament. As Sul Ross graduates (class of 1988 and class of 1989), we have al ways considered Alpine to be our second home.

A group of illegal aliens in Texas has filed a lawsuit claiming their arrests on local and state charges are “unconstitutional.” Adding to this class-action chutzpah, they want more than $5 million in compensation.

We extend a sincere thank you to the following individuals for the success of the Alpine Multicultural Festival on June 11-12. A special thanks to City Manager Megan Atrium, Mayor Catherine Eaves, Police Chief Darrell Losoya, Chris Ruggia, and Eddie Molinar and his city park staff for their support.

Once again June has come around, and it’s a time to remember the 19th of June, 1865, when Texas Democrat slave owners were forced to acknowledge the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of their slaves.
