The Alpine Fightin’ Bucks took on the Mc-Camey Badgers for their first scrimmage of the season on Aug. 12 at Buck stadium.

Senior Trey Ervin and sophomore Devon Rojo both took some reps, and shared the spotlight Friday night in the quarterback spot. Ervin stepped into the role as the starting quarterback replacing former quarterback Jayden Canaba who will be attending Angelo State University this fall. Sophomore Devon Rojo will also step into the role this year for the Fightin’ Bucks.

This year the Bucks have some key returning players such as senior Ylan Hernandez who rushed for over 622 yards last season, and senior Jordan Rodriguez who was one of the top two in tackles from the 2021 season with 64.

Also returning this year is junior Reese Ahrens with 54 tackles, and sophomore Davian Fierro with 47.

The Buck roster consists of over 30 players on the varsity team, while the junior varsity has 35. Coach John Fellows said he was happy with the effort of both varsity and JV teams last week. “We have some things to clean up, but it is all fixable,” he said, adding that on Monday the Bucks had a very good practice.

Last year Alpine finished with an overall record of 5-7 with a Bi-District title. The Bucks will have one more scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 19, against the Pecos Eagles in Pecos at the Crockett Middle School football field beginning at 6 p.m. with the JV followed by the varsity.
