The 81st annual National Newspaper Week in October recognized the service of newspapers and their employees across North America and is sponsored by Newspaper Association Managers. Community Forum was this year’s theme.

Parents thinking of vaccinating your children, here is some information from the FDA and CDC, “But we’re never going to learn about how safe this vaccine is unless we start giving it. That’s just the way it goes.”

After several conversations with local citizens and business owners, it is clear to me that the Alpine community cannot get the fall 2021 Sul Ross enrollment statistics. This is glaringly obvious because in prior years, those statistics by campus were front page news. I would assume that local media depend on that information being provided by the university.

Nov. 11 is a day when we honor all our veterans who put on the uniform to protect our way of life, and never asked for a thank you. Many came back injured, and had to adjust to a new way of life. Remember, freedom is not free!

If you farm or ranch for a living, by now you’ve almost certainly heard the term WOTUS, which stands for Waters of the United States. The subject of regulatory and legal battles for most of the last decade, the saga continues.

On Thursday, Nov. 11, Alpine ISD will honor our veterans at our annual Veterans Day program. This event is one of our most anticipated community gatherings. We take great pride in this opportunity to thank each veteran for everything they have done for our wonderful county.

“Remember to set your clocks back this Saturday night. Remember to set your clocks forward this Saturday night.” The dumbest collective human experience we exercise twice a year is switching our clocks forward one hour, then back one hour just four months later.

Freedom worth working for When I read Eleazar Cano’s words in the Avalanche on Oct. 21, I am reminded of how grateful I am for growing older.

The City of Alpine is excited to announce the native tree giveaway event taking place in celebration of Texas Arbor Day. Arbor Day is an annual observance across America that celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. The City is the recipient of the Apache Corporation Tree Grant Program, a program by which the Corporation has been able to donate approximately 4.8 million trees since 2005.

Despite the many blessings of living in America, why aren’t more Americans happy? According to World Population Review, the 2021 World Happiness Report ranks America as the 19th happiest out of 146 countries. The report bases happiness on six categories, including gross domestic product, social support, life expectancy, generosity, perceptions of each country’s corruption levels, and the freedom for citizens to make their own life choices.
