Roger William Pinckney died in Marathon on August 3 of ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Born July 12, 1945, in Austin, to John M. Pinckney and Mary Reed Pinckney, he spent his childhood on the Eastside in Austin. He attended Palm and Pease Elementary schools and graduated from St. Edward’s High School in

Austin. He was a labor leader and organizer for the Federal Employees Union at Internal Revenue Service in Austin.

He and some family, friends and neighbors organized one of the first Austin neighborhood groups in the 1970s. North University Neighborhood Association, later named Friends of Eastwoods Park, succeeded in stopping spot zoning in the University of Texas area in the 1970s.

Roger, a lifelong Democrat, was Chair of the Llano County Democrats. He served on the Llano City Council and three terms as mayor of Llano in the Texas Hill Country. He also served many years as president of the Llano County Historical Society Museum. Roger bought and sold rare books, photographs, postcards, and other ephemera specializing in Southwest and Texas history.

Roger loved West Texas. He and wife, Kathy, finally moved to Marathon in March 2020 - his happy place.

He was preceded in death by his loving parents, John, and Mary Pinckney; his brother, John M. Pinckney, III. Roger is survived by his wife, Kathy Purdy Pinckney; sons, Roger, Jr. and Thomas; older sister, Mary Sue Neptune; and five grandsons, Andy, Oliver, Stephen, Jackson and Michael.

As per his request, there will be no memorial service. Ashes are to be scattered at the old family site in Austin at Oakwood Cemetery.
