Ke Koa, affectionately known as Coach K, and his friends called him K.K., moved to Alpine in 2002. He served as the defensive coordinator and head track and cross-country coach at Sul Ross State University, where he worked until 2012 as a respected lecturer in the kinesiology department.
Ke Koa grew up in
Hawaii, where he embraced the Aloha spirit, which he later brought with him to Alpine. He was a wonderful friend to many and made a lasting impact on those around him. If you were fortunate enough to have met Ke Koa, you will never forget how kind and genuine he was to everyone. He will always be remembered for his big smile, infectious laugh, and the positivity he radiated in every interaction, making everyone feel appreciated and uplifted.
Ke Koa and his parents returned to the water together in a paddle out at Kaimana Beach, also known as Sans Souci, which means “without a care,” in Honolulu. Growing up, Ke Koa and his family spent countless days enjoying the ocean at this beach. Hawaiians believe that water is the source of life, and by returning to it, one can find healing and be made whole again.
