Doris Van Cleve-Keen
Doris Van Cleve-Keen, 79, passed away on August 15, 2026, following a brief illness. Doris was born on September 25, 1946, the eldest daughter of Caswell (C.V.) and Nelda Van Cleve, in Kingsville.
Doris grew up in Houston and on the family ranch in Zavala County, and graduated from high school in Carrizo Springs. She proudly served as a Hospital Corpsman in the United States Navy for more than 10 years. It was during this time she met Darrell Keen, who was also serving, and they married on August 15, 1975. Darrell remained in the Navy until he retired, but Doris eventually left the Service to be at home with their four children. Darrell’s service eventually took them to Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, where Doris and Darrell served together on the Grape Creek Volunteer Fire Department. She was a gifted gardener and an avid reader who possessed a wealth of knowledge on many subjects, from medicine to world history, and was happy to share that knowledge with anyone who wanted to learn. Doris never strayed from her love of the simple country life, and in her leisure time she enjoyed campfires, good books, and classic movies.
Doris is survived by her sisters, Jeannette Van Cleve Emmons of Alpine, and Elizabeth Van Cleve of Uvalde; daughters Sharon Walker of Pryor, Oklahoma, Debra (John) Sturgis of Salado, and Hilary (John) Choate of San Angelo; daughter-in-law Vicki Keen of Carrizo Springs; 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Interment will be at 10 a.m., September 26, 2026, at the Van Cleve family cemetery at Cometa, Zavala County, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the American Heart Association at www.heart.org.
