Delinquent HOT funds continue to spark interest

Collecting delinquent hotel occupancy taxes was again prominent at the Brewster County Commissioners Court regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 13. Commissioners heard a presentation by Austin attorney Justin Bragiel, general counsel of the Texas Hotel and Lodging Association, and Alpine attorney Rod Ponton spoke about enforcement options available to the county.

The Phainopepla is surely among the most beautiful and graceful of all birds in the Trans Pecos. The male is sleek and shiny black with a long tail and a ragged crest that is often raised, and when he flies he shows bright white patches on his rounded wings. Although the female is gray all over, both have bright red eyes. Pretty flashy stuff.

Gun and knife show at Gallego Center

A good crowd streamed into the Pete P. Gallego Center on the Sul Ross State University campus for the annual Lions Club gun and knife show. Held on Labor Day weekend each year, it is the club’s major effort to fund its charitable activities in the community.

Everyone loves a good Texas barbecue, and a Fort Davis couple has gone beyond by participating in competitive barbecue competitions all over the state and country, with plenty of awards and bragging rights to show off back home.

Storm damage to trail and drive

Last week heavy rains resulted in damage to both the Lost Mine Trail and the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. The Lost Mine will remain closed until crews can repair a damaged section of switchbacks. The Ross Maxwell Drive is now closed south of Mule Ears Overlook due to damage and debris.

Alpine Humane Society Pet of the Week is Minnie, an adorable and outgoing blue-eyed girl. She is confident and independent in the play yard, and gets along with most other dogs.
