Every little city in this West Texas area can feel like an island surrounded by desert, and when you’re lost at sea, one of your main priorities is food. And good food is even more appreciated here than when you are buried in the options that larger cities provide. Out here, many good restaurants struggle, and some can’t make it but there are those that occasionally persevere because they hit that sweet spot.

L IFE There will be a celebration of the life of Brian Kokernot at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 1308 Nth 5th Street in Alpine. The celebration of life will commence at 2 p.m.

Borderlands Research Institute hosted this summer’s job corps crew from the I-20 Wildlife Preserve and Jenna Welch Nature Study Center located outside Midland. The students, along with BRI graduate assistant Caleb Hughes learned how to use a Yagi tracking antenna during their field trip to the Nature Conservancy’s Davis Mountains Preserve.

The Marathon School Board of Trustees met in executive session on August 1 to discuss Superintendent Dr. Ivonne Durant’s performance evaluation, as required by district policy and her employment contract.

Beginning September 1, recent legislation passed by the State of Texas requires that a sheriff of any county with a total population of less than 350,000, in which a public school is located, must hold a semiannual meeting to discuss school safety. This legislation comes on the heels of the tragedy in Uvalde in May 2022, while also reminding those in Alpine of the school shooting that occurred at Alpine High School on September 8, 2016.
