The Brewster County commissioner’s court held its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, September 12. During this meeting’s announcements portion, county commissioner Pct. 3, Ruben Ortega, shared with the court about the upcoming cabrito cookoff benefit for the Marathon Volunteer Fire Department which will be held at the Post starting Friday night and continuing through Saturday.

When one hears the term “Friday Night Lights”, most likely they think of football. With a movie by that title focused on the Odessa Permian Panther football team, that would stand to reason. But what many fail to realize, that along with the ball players and cheerleaders, the unsung heroes of those Friday nights are the marching band.

FFA students to meet on Sul Ross campus twice in September

Area Future Farmers of America (FFA) students from Alpine, Fort Stockton, Crane, Iraan, Pecos, and Wink will visit the Sul Ross State University campus in Alpine. On Monday, September 11, 116 freshman students enrolled in their first year of agriculture classes will attend the “Greenhand Day” conference and participate in activities ranging from friendly competitions within and across the FFA chapters as well as personal and organizational leadership sessions.

Last Tuesday’s Alpine ISD school board meeting saw the long awaited STAAR testing results presented to the board, along with the monthly reports from each of the campus principals and final credits from Imperial and Parkhill. While all of this was standard in a monthly Alpine ISD board meeting, one of the last items on the agenda found Alpine ISD Superintendent Dr. Michelle Rinehart informing the board about a public schoolprivate school partnership that allows public schools to garner more state funding by coenrolling private school students in local school districts.

Sul Ross rodeo looking to reload

The Sul Ross Rodeo Team lost a significant amount of talent last year, most notably Tristen Hutchings who finished his Sul Ross rodeo career with National Championships in 2021 and 2023 and a Reserve National Championship in 2022. Along with Hutchings, the Sul Ross Rodeo Team graduated 20 seniors on a 34-person team.
