Young poets in grades kindergarten through 12th are invited to join in the fun of the Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering by writing and submitting an original poem. Topics must be related to ranch life such as cowboys, cowgirls, livestock, rodeo, ranch pets, the environment, and so on. The deadline is Jan. 22.

Alpine Humane Society Pet of the Week is Lacey, who is learning how to love. She is shy, and takes a little while to feel comfortable. However, she is smart, learns quickly, and is responsive to trying new things.

Recently I rewatched the movie “Geronimo: An American Legend” on one of the TV movie channels. While it seems a fair depiction of the events leading up to the final surrender of Geronimo, at no point was there mention of the role of the 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers.

A new year is for new beginnings and new goals, and for the Marfa Nutrition Center and the Marfa Public Library, all it takes is time commitment from volunteers. The Marfa Nutrition Center provides Meals on Wheels for homebound seniors 60 years and older.
