Big Bend Democrats will be hosting a forum for Brewster County candidates running in the March 1 Democratic primary. The forum will be held at the Alpine ISD Auditorium at 705 West Sul Ross Avenue on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. The candidates and the offices they seek are for Brewster County Judge, Benjamin Barrientes, Oscar Cobos, and Mimi Smith; District Clerk, Sarah Fellows Martinez; County Clerk, Sarah Vasquez; County Treasurer, Julie K. Morton and Lorene Villanueva; County Commissioner Pct. 2, Sara Colando; Justice of the Peace Pct. 2, Tim Relleva; and Justice of the Peace Pct. 3, Susana M. Gonzales.

A snow day in Alpine

The Brewster County Courthouse was blanketed with snow and ice on Feb. 3 as a winter storm gripped the area. Icy roads and single-digit temperatures forced school closings, and many businesses were closed as well. No long-term power outages were reported, and sunshine and slightly milder temperatures over the next couple of days brought the area back to normal. Avalanche photo by Gail Diane Yovanovich

Chinati launches apprenticeship program

In March an apprenticeship designed to recruit women in the region for job training in adobe restoration will begin at the Chinati Foundation. Participants from the Tri-County will spend six weeks learning about earthen construction through a combination of workshop sessions and hands-on training. In the process, apprentices will help restore Donald Judd’s distinctive adobe-walled courtyards as part of Chinati’s major restoration of the John Chamberlain Building in downtown Marfa.

Texas A&M Forest Service is working to spread wildfire prevention messaging across Texas. Some parts of Texas have recently received some winter precipitation. While any type of precipitation can reduce wildfire danger temporarily, areas with limited rain or snow fall will become dry again soon.
