Council OKs final readings of tax rate, budget

The Alpine city council held a special council meeting on Tuesday, September 26 and a regular meeting on October 3. During the September 26 meeting, Alpine city mayor Catherine Eaves said in her mayoral report, “We’ve made a plan going forward, and this council is bound and determined to be one that gets things done, so we are going to take care of business.” There was only one item on this consent agenda for the September 26 meeting.

Porter’s sells to Lowe’s Markets

The Porter’s grocery store chain has reached a deal with Lowe’s Markets out of Littlefield to purchase it’s franchise. The business will officially change hands effective December 1 according to a press release from Porter’s corporate office received last week.

Lady Bucks players named Texas stat leaders

Body
Recently a list of Texas high school volleyball statistical leaders was published, written by national sportswriter Eric Frantz, and several of the Lady Bucks made the top 50. Paula Vargas was recently named as an assist stat leader, ranked number 35 out of 200 players in Texas in number of assists. Mia Morris was ranked number 17 on this list in the dig category and Adayna Garcia was listed as number 26 out of 200 for player hitting percentage.

Sul Ross Lady Lobos calling it a comeback

The Sul Ross Lady Lobo volleyball team took on Le Tourneau University Saturday afternoon at the Pete P. Gallego Center. Although it took a fourth set to conquer the Yellowjackets, the Lobos were able to pull it off.

Fightin’ Bucks win first district game

The Alpine Fightin’ Bucks faced Odessa Compass Academy on Friday, September 22 in Alpine’s first district game this season, winning 28-21. Played at Ratliff stadium, this game showcased the potential for game turnover in each quarter.
Last Friday’s pep rally themed “Soccer Moms vs BBQ Dads” rallied the Fightin’ Bucks to persevere and come back from a deficit score to overcome Odessa Compass 28-21 in Friday night’s game, the Bucks first district game of the season. Portions of Big Bend to be closed in October

According to a recent press release, the Deadhorse Mountains, including the surrounding areas of Dagger Flat Road and Old Ore Road will be closed beginning October 3. The first two weeks of October, the National Park Service (NPS) in collaboration with Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) will be conducting aerial surveys and removal of nonnative aoudad to help protect the native desert bighorn sheep.
