The Alpine High School Fightin’ Bucks varsity basketball team closed out the calendar year on a high note, knocking off Crane High School 49-74 in front of the home crowd at Wilson-Stice Court. The win allowed Alpine to head into the holiday break with momentum after navigating one of the toughest stretches on its schedule.

Lincy E. Corp, 91, of San Angelo passed away peacefully on December 25, 2025. Lincy was born in Barksdale on April 21, 1934, to Harry and Hallie Clarke. Along with sisters June and Dixie and brother Richard, she enjoyed the opportunity to live in several places throughout the state including Corpus Christi, Alpine and El Paso. She married James D. Corp in El Paso on December 4, 1954, and together they raised three children, Gene, Justin and Cynthia.

Curtis Jahnke, beloved husband and father, passed away on December 1, 2025 in Alpine. He was born January 23, 1950 in Fargo, ND to parents Eldon Curtis and Maybelle Anne (McPherson) Jahnke. He worked on the family farm until graduating from Chaffee, ND high school. He attended Wahpeton Technical College and North Dakota State University, graduating in 1972 in Mechanical Engineering and worked as a construction superintendent at Swingen Construction building bridges.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we will have a change in our lamb and goat judge this year for the show. We will now have Sam Spradlin as the judge for the 2026 show.

Every year, millions of people set New Year’s resolutions with the hope that this will be the year things finally change. While the tradition dates back nearly 4,000 years to the ancient Babylonians, modern resolutions are less about ceremony and more about personal improvement. The challenge, of course, isn’t setting a goal—it’s sticking with it.

Start the New Year on high ground: With the calendar about to flip to 2026 and much of Texas stubbornly refusing to act like winter, Far West Texans are finding themselves in a rare position: New Year’s resolutions that don’t require gloves, parkas, or a treadmill in the corner of the living room. With temperatures lingering in the 70s and sunshine doing its usual West Texas thing for the next week or so, the great outdoors is calling, and Davis Mountains State Park is answering with a lineup that makes starting 2026 feel less like a chore and more like an adventure.

This year’s Wildlife Weekend held in Alpine on January 30- February 1 focuses on owls of the Davis Mountains, featuring experts from Borderlands Research Institute, Texas Parks & Wildlife, and other conservation organizations. All events are free and open to the public.
