Means brings championship to Trans-Pecos

Evan Means, a junior at Texas Tech, won the Non-Pro Division 1 National championship, and helped Texas Tech bring home the national championship for Division 1 in the collegiate ranch horse competition. Ranch horse competition is one of the fastest growing segments of the equine industry.

Alpine High School graduate Elena Cano of the University of Alaska Anchorage recently ran a personal-best in the 800 meter to win the heptathlon at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championships on May 2 in Bellingham, Wash.

In the past few years, actions by U.S. officials wreaked havoc on American lives. After COVID hit they denounced therapeutics, supplements, and treatments that may have saved lives as they exploited novel vaccines that are now showing signs of negative effects to include death.

The end of privacy rights?

The blatantly political opinion written by Justice Alito to justify striking down Roe v. Wade, was not just about abortion. Under Roe, a right to privacy (including making private choices) for individual persons was assumed to be intended by the Bill of Rights. The Ninth Amendment recognizes individual rights that were not explicitly stated in the U.S. Constitution.

Our city voters have spoken in electing a new mayor. It was a tightly contested mayoral contest between Catherine Eaves and Amit Rangra, with Eaves the winner. An estimated 738 voters went to the polls.

Utilities director addresses jurisdiction concerns

The City of Alpine held a special meeting on May 10 and extra-territorial jurisdiction problems and building code issues were topics of concern addressed by Director of Public Utilities Keith Segar. Segar told council members there was an ETJ buffer zone in the city that had allowed certain businesses and city residents to obtain city services such as water, but those places were not within the city limits, thus creating a problem for the city’s utilities infrastructure.
