Canaba again takes ASC honor

Senior setter/middle blocker Annika Canaba was named American Southwest Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week in an announcement made Sept. 28 by the conference office. It is her second of the season and the seventh of her career.

The Alpine Fightin’ Bucks and Coach John Fellows handily beat the Kermit Yellowjackets on Sept. 24, 35-21, behind a strong defensive effort and a resurgent offense, moving their record to 1-4.

Fiesta with Mariachi Santa Cruz

It was a delightful evening for a street side serenade as Presidio’s Mariachi Santa Cruz, with musicians Michael Hernandez, Molly Rodriguez, Lucy Ferguson, and John Ferguson, delighted an enthusiastic crowd on Sept. 18 at the Harvest Moon Weekend of art and music in Alpine. The annual fall event celebrates all things artistic as it brings together locals and tourists alike touring local murals and galleries while enjoying a relaxing evening with family and friends. Sul Ross State University is nationally known for its rodeo program, and in 1949 was the birthplace of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association. The Sul Ross rodeo team has since earned nine national championships - seven men’s and two women’s - and the rodeo program is currently experiencing a resurgence, led by nationally acclaimed coach C.J. Aragon.

AISD pleased with construction progress

Alpine ISD Board of Trustees held its regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 15, and the new high school construction progress brought positive feedback from trustees. Board members absent were Dist. 2, Joe Portillo, and Dist. 5, Justin Cross.
