Alpine native and former Brewster County Clerk Berta Rios-Martinez is all smiles at a retirement celebration in her honor at the Alpine Civic Center on July 31. The party included dinner, dancing, and lots of cherished memories with family and friends who joined to commemorate Rios-Martinez’s milestone. Alpine Humane Society Pet of the Week is Fred. Fred and Wilma are two perfect 5-month-old siblings, and they are kittens that rock! They love to romp, play and snuggle. Although Fred is the more outgoing of the two, Wilma does not let Fred’s personality get ahead of hers.

Deputy detains illegals

On July 30, a Brewster County deputy patrolling south of Marathon conducted a vehicle stop for a traffic violation. During the encounter, he observed five passengers who had entered the U.S. from Mexico illegally, and had been picked up by the driver. The five illegal aliens were turned over to U.S. Border Patrol agents for processing and deportation. The case is currently under investigation. Courtesy photo
