Big Bend National Park will cut down and apply herbicide to invasive tamarisk along the Rio Grande, including the Hot Springs area, from February 12-28. The area along the Rio Grande from Solis to the eastern park boundary will be temporarily closed in sections and marked with signs while herbicide is being applied. This work is not expected to affect visitor access to the historic Langford Hot Springs.

Many voters may have received postcard applications to submit for an absentee ballot for the Republican Primary by mail recently. The postcard applications ask for your sensitive personal information, such as birthdate, social security number, and driver’s license number. They are also preprinted with your voter identification number, name, and address. The return address to Cynthia Cox, Brewster County Elections Administrator, is also printed on this card.

In an unusually short meeting, the Alpine City Council held its regular meeting on Tuesday, February 3, at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers with all council members in attendance. The council heard no public comment nor any comments on the two items listed on the agenda for public hearing.

The Sul Ross Rodeo Team was back at it earlier this week as they competed in Fort Worth for the first rodeo of the spring season. Head Coach C.J. Aragon said this is a great opportunity for these young competitors because they will get to compete during the same time the professional rodeo is going on.

The Brewster County Commissioners met for their regular meeting on Tuesday, January 27, at 9:30 a.m. in the commissioner’s courtroom. Precinct 3 Commissioner Ruben Ortega was absent, and Precinct 4 Commissioner Mo Morrow was delayed after someone ran through his fence in Paisano Pass, where loose cattle posed a potential danger to motorists.

The Alpine ISD Board of Trustees held its annual school board trustees appreciation dinner last Wednesday, January 21, at 5 p.m. in the Alpine High School cafeteria before tackling district business in the band hall. Ag teacher Doug Fox and students prepared and presented the meal. Board trustees Josh Cross, Nicki Ahrens, and Joe Portillo were absent.
