Applications will be accepted beginning March 9 for Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) grants from the City of Alpine for the 2026-2027 fiscal year. Visitor events and other projects that draw overnight visits to the City are eligible for funding consideration, according to the requirements of state law.

In celebration of International Dark Skies Week, the McDonald Observatory, along with Alpine, Fort Davis, Presidio, Terlingua, and others, will hold star parties, telescope demonstrations, public talks, meteorite demonstrations, owl walks, and much more.

On Saturday, February 21, fifteen students from the Big Bend Area gathered with family and friends at the Event Center of the Museum of the Big Bend to recite original poems they entered in the Lone Star Cowboy Poetry Gathering Youth Cowboy Poetry Contest. One hundred ninety poems were entered in the contest from as far away as Ohio.

The Alpine Independent School Board of Trustees met last Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. for their regular meeting in the school administration building. Trustees Josh Cross of District 7 and Joe Portillo of District 2 were absent.

In 2024, Sul Ross hosted its inaugural Water in the Desert Conference, inviting experts, legislators, and stakeholders to share their stories, work, and research on how to preserve a desert’s most precious resource: water.
