In staying with the springtime/ early April recipes that are light on the palate, I thought I’d share something special to many who grew up a generation ago. Nothing says springtime quite like a plate of fried green tomatoes. As the days stretch a little longer over the Davis Mountains and the air begins to warm, this classic dish needs to make its way around your entertaining table. Crisp on the outside, tender and tangy on the inside, fried green tomatoes aren’t just a side dish or appetizer; they’re a seasonal tradition and a true Southern staple.

Border wall through Big Bend apparently on hold After public outcry, a physical border wall through Big Bend National Park appears to be on hold, The Texas Tribune reported. In February, the Trump administration waived more than two dozen environmental laws in order to clear the way for a 150-milelong wall through West Texas, including Big Bend and the adjoining state park.

Claudia Gallego Cain was recently inducted into the Sul Ross Athletic Hall of Honor Class of 2026. Cain graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 2005 and went on to earn an M.S. from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center.

The McDonald Observatory invites everyone to participate in the Dark Skies Festival from April 13-19. Events will be held at the observatory and locations around Terlingua, Presidio, Fort Davis, and Alpine. There will be constellation tours, telescope viewings, special talks, and more.

Dear Editor, In 1972, while undergoing U.S. infantry training for that war in Southeast Asia, I went through escape and evasion training at Fort Ord, California. A sobering experience, it was traumatic for this then, recently graduated college student, i.e., this 21-year-old. But from what I have learned in the last half century, that training was kindergarten school compared to today’s elite escape and evasion version.

We have been blessed with some recent Spring rainfall over the past several days, which will significantly contribute to a seasonal green-up that will help to kickstart our growing season. This earlyseason rainfall is particularly important this year due to the fact that we have an abundance of forage remaining from last year’s growth, which in turn leads to a significant increase in wildfire risk. When West Texas misses out on spring moisture, which is not at all unusual, summer thunderstorms bring a large dose of anxiety with them as the lightning produced is a major contributor to wildfires.

The biggest claim to fame for Pecos, Texas, is that it is home to the World’s First Rodeo. Originating on July 4, 1883, cowboys from local area ranches such as the Lazy Y and the NA competed against one another to determine who was the best at roping and riding, thus establishing a 143-year-old tradition.
