DAR Good Citizen Awards

The Paisano Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution presented DAR Good Citizen Awards to seniors from six area high schools at an awards ceremony on April 6 held in the First Presbyterian Church of Alpine. On behalf of the Paisano Chapter, Regent Kay Houston welcomed Good Citizens, their parents, and school representatives to the meeting. Vice Regent and Good Citizens Chair Judy Perry discussed the significance of the awards. Dr. Kendra DeHart, chapter member and associate professor of history at Sul Ross State University, presented the awards.

Texas Mountain Trail Heritage Tourism Grant

The Texas Mountain Trail mini-grant was awarded to the Fort Davis Historical Society (FDHS) for exhibit preservation and development at the Overland Trail Museum in Fort Davis. “The ongoing project will include lining shelves and drawers with 100% cotton board, and framing photos, and documents with museum- grade materials to preserve and improve visuals.

Local photographer’s childhood dream becomes reality

Off the coast of the South American country of Ecuador lie the Galapagos Islands. They are a wildlife lover, and coincidentally photographers’ paradise. Lee Hoy has made his childhood dream of being a wildlife photographer come to life, having visited these islands more than six times since he embarked upon the journey from dream to reality.

Alpine named in Keep Texas Beautiful top 10

The Alpine City Council held their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, April 2. Alpine City Manager, Megan Antrim shared the exciting news that Alpine has been listed in the top 10 for the Keep Texas Beautiful Governor’s Achievement Award.
Alpine City Mayor, Catherine Eaves recognized Jennifer Stewart, Charles Fox, Samantha Johnson, Vanessa Soto, and Adrien Quintella for their many dedicated hours in animal control and shelter service.

Lemon Braised Artichokes

Ingredients: 2 9-ounce packages of frozen artichoke hearts ½ cup water ½ cup white wine 3 wide strips of lemon zest 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 4 tablespoons olive oil, divided 2 minced garlic cloves 1/8 cup chopped parsley 1/8 cup chopped mint Salt and pepper to taste Directions: Bring ½ cup each of water and white wine, two packages of artichoke hearts, three wide strips of lemon zest, and 2 tablespoons each of lemon juice and olive oil. Bring to a simmer in a large skillet.

HEAD OVER MEALS Are you like me? Do you struggle to decide what sort of side dish you want to make with your meals? This is the one conundrum that I always seem to struggle with. Sure, I could make the same old tired green beans or California mix, or corn, and if the asparagus looks good at the store, I may grab a bunch of that or whip up some yellow squash.
